Why Choose Our Cobia Fishing Charter?

Our skipper, Captain John, is a fifth-generation Key West local who loves sharing his passion for the Gulf with his guests. When you set sail with us for cobia, you’re drawing on years of expertise to maximize your chances of hooking one.

We know the secret haunts and feeding spots of this impressive fish and have the techniques you need to put your lure right under their noses! Our crew provides all the necessary gear, bait and tackle required, and will professionally clean, filet, and bag everything you catch, so all you’ll need to bring is some sunscreen and a good attitude!

About The cobia in Key West

The cobia is a medium-sized, strong-looking fish with a flattened head and a slightly projecting lower jaw. Mature cobias can get up to 6 ft long, and weigh over 100 lbs! Cobias are plentiful in the Keys, prowling underwater structures such as reefs, wrecks or oil platforms for its preferred prey of crabs, stingrays, and baitfish. They are also very curious, and will swim right up to a boat to investigate you!

Once hooked, they prefer to dive deep instead of leaping or running at the surface, so a big cobia can definitely test your endurance. After patiently reeling them in til they’re exhausted, these fish offer up a firm white meat that is prized by sushi chefs. Just be mindful of their dorsal spines as you haul them aboard!

How We Catch Cobia in Key West

Cobia are pretty enthusiastic biters, since they grow incredibly fast - sometimes up to 40 inches in just two years. This means that your chances of hooking one are good - provided we find them first. Our crew has a few underwater structures we like to check out, as well as drifting near bridge pilings for any sign of cobia.

Once we’ve found a good spot, it’s simply a matter of casting a line into the water with some crab or baitfish (you can also use artificial lures such as plastic worms or bucktail jigs). In spring, cobia gather inshore and much closer to the surface, which also makes for great fly fishing. A keeper needs to be at least 36 inches long, with a limit of 2 per boat, but be sure to check for any updates to local limits and regulations.

Cobia Fishing Charters FAQs

Cobia can be caught year round, but winter time (December to April) is when they gather in the Keys in the greatest numbers.

Casting with live bait (crab, squid, or eel) around offshore structures such as oil rigs, buoys, or bridge pilings is how we like to fish for cobia. In spring, when fish gather closer to shore and on the surface, fly fishing with a 10-12 wt rod is also possible.

Cobia prefer warm waters, so relatively close to shore – not more than a few miles out.

Cobia are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, which means they’re plentiful worldwide, but the local limit is still 1 fish per day or 2 fish per boat.

Our base is the Oceans Edge Resort & Marina, and our mailing address is 5095 Peninsular Ave, Stock Island, Key West FL 33040.
