About The Lobster Species In Key West

Spiny Lobster: Known as the Caribbean spiny lobster, this species is the most common in Key West. These lobsters can grow up to 15 pounds, but the average catch is between one to five pounds. They typically inhabit shallow waters, hiding under rocks and coral reefs, making them a popular target for our Key West Lobster Fishing Charters.

Slipper Lobster: This fascinating species, although less common, is found in Key West waters. With a distinctive flattened body, they are usually smaller than spiny lobsters, weighing between one to three pounds. They prefer sandy or muddy bottoms and are often caught by divers using specialized gear. Their unique appearance and delicious meat make them a prized catch.

Spanish Lobster: Also known as the painted lobster, this smaller, beautifully colored species is found in Key West reefs. They rarely exceed a pound in weight and are known for their striking patterns of blue, yellow, and red. While not as commonly targeted as spiny lobsters, their vibrant colors and tasty meat make them a delightful addition to any catch.
