About The Grouper in the Florida Keys
Grouper season in the Florida Keys runs from May 31st to December 31st. Although we can hook them year-round, we only get to keep them during this season.
There are many species of grouper that call the Florida Keys home, some of which we can legally catch, and some of which are protected. Each has unique traits, but all are feisty…and delicious! Some of the more popular species we can reel in include:
Black Grouper: An olive-grey fish with dark blotches, these fish usually weigh about 40 pounds, though mature adults can reach 100 pounds!
Gag Grouper: these mid-sized, mottled grey groupers are regarded as very tasty, and usually average between 10 and 15 pounds.
Red Grouper: These bottom-dwelling fish are indeed reddish-colored, and have large eyes that distinguish it from its cousins. Mature fish usually clock in around 15 pounds.
Scamp: Although smaller than other groupers - usually only 2 feet long and five pounds - many people says the scamp is also the most delicious of them all, and possibly the tastiest fish in the ocean!
Snowy Grouper: This large fish can only be found at extreme depths, and it might take a full day just to track one down - but the results are worth it, as this is a tireless fighter and beautiful trophy fish.
And more!
How We Catch Grouper
Grouper are bottom-dwelling fish, and mature individuals tend to be found out in deeper waters, around reefs and wrecks and other underwater structures. The good news is, they’re usually not very picky eaters, and will eagerly chomp down on live or frozen bait of sardines or squid. Deep-dropping your lines to anywhere from 60 to 1,100 feet near an oil rig or shipwreck is a pretty foolproof way to snag one of these suckers.
Once hooked, it’s simply a matter of reeling them in, which can be a challenge when the fish is over 1,000 feet down! Patience and persistence is the key, with our crew on hand to assist every step of the way. Once hauled aboard, we will professionally clean, filet, and bag your catch so you can enjoy this tasty fish as soon as you step off the boat.
What Else You Can Catch With Us
Grouper aren’t the only things biting in the waters of the Gulf Coast! Some of the other species you might hook include:
…and more!
