Why Choose Our King Mackerel Fishing Charter?

Fish Daily Charters was started in 2008 by our skipper, Captain John, a fifth-generation native of the Keys, and his love for the Gulf and all its bounties is something we want to share with all of our guests,  When you sign up with us to head after king mackerel, you can fish with confidence knowing that we practice sustainable fishing and eco-safety to keep our oceans pristine for future generations.

Our upfront pricing and flexible cancellations mean you won’t get caught short if plans change, and our charters are suitable for all ages, so you can bring your family and friends along for the journey!

About The King Mackerel in Key West

King Mackerels have a streamlined body with a forked tail, and are silver with a greenish-blue back. Mature specimens can get up to over 5 ft and 100 lbs, but we typically reel in fish between 10 and 20 lbs. They can be found in warm coastal waters from the Carolinas to Brazil, and cruise the open oceans near the surface in large schools in search of prey. When a suitable school of baitfish is found, watch out! The sight of baitfish leaping out of the water in panic is a sure sign that a school of kingfish is nearby.

How We Catch King Mackerel in the Florida Keys

The season for king mackerel usually runs from November to March, when they migrate down the coast toward warmer tropical waters - and right through our backyard. Our crew looks for telltale signs that a school is nearby, such as large gatherings of seabirds.

Once located, our preferred method is trolling past them with live bait such as squid, although they’ll chomp on spoons and artificial lures as well. Once hauled aboard, king mackerel are very tasty when fresh, but unfortunately don’t freeze very well due to the high oil content of the flesh. For this reason, big mackerel (over 30 pounds or so) are often smoked instead of put on ice, to use in fish dips and other dishes.
