About The Mahi Mahi

The mahi mahi, also known as dorado or dolphin (no relation to the marine mammal!) is a surface-dwelling fish that can be found everywhere from India to Hawai’i to right here in the Florida Keys. Their distinctive “forehead” is much more square in males (called bulls), whereas females have a smaller, rounder forehead.

Their beautiful color - blue-green and speckled sides, rich gold underbelly, and vibrant blue fins - make them an instantly recognizable game fish. They can reach up to five feet long and weigh up to thirty pounds, which makes for a truly impressive catch. Mahi mahi are also known as very tasty, making them a great addition to your dinner table.

How We Catch Mahi Mahi

Mahi mahi are also among the fastest-growing fish in the ocean, so they have epic appetites! This means that once they’re found, chances of hooking one are very good.

Mahi mahi like to travel in pairs of groups, so where there’s one, there’s usually more to be found. We keep an eye on the sky for any seabirds gathering overhead, which is a good sign of fish activity. Mahi mahi also like to gather near floating clumps of seaweed or floating palm fronds, as well as color lines which mean a change in ocean salinity.

Once we find a school, our preferred method is trolling with flying tackle and bait or lures. If the situation calls for it, we can also chum the waters to induce a feeding frenzy.

Once hooked, these mighty game fish are known for their fighting spirit and spectacular leaps, so be ready for a battle! But the rewards are worth it, as this fish will make an impressive trophy as well as a memorable meal.
